As you enter Rutherford County, the signs welcoming you state
"small-town friendly." The county is unique in that, while rich in
scenic, rural communities, it is also conveniently located between the
major cities of Asheville, Charlotte , Spartanburg and Greenville, SC.
So you have the benefit of peaceful, friendly, country life without being very far from the convenience and glamour of the city, via North
Carolina's superior road system. Most of Rutherford County is located in the Isothermal Belt, which is a
mild and temperate zone that enjoys all four seasons—all spectacular
and none severe. It's the best four-season climate in America. The closest "loaf of bread" is at the service center in Gilkey, 6 miles
from the mountain. The closest food chains are 12 miles away. Also only 12 miles away are a new Wal-Mart SuperCenter and a new Lowe's Home Center. The modern Rutherford Hospital is just 12 miles away as well. The Sanger Clinic, one of the nation’s top heart centers, is 75 miles away at the Charlotte Medical Center. The Isothermal Community College, part of the North Carolina University
system, is, yes, just 12 miles away. It has a variety of courses designed specifically for senior citizens. Rutherfordton (population 3,000)—just 10 miles away—is the county seat of Rutherford
county and the home of various state and county services. The county is 568 square miles in size and contains 65,000 kind and gentle
folks. The county is predominantly composed of furniture-grade hardwood forests, as is New Forest Mountain. Charlotte Douglas Airport is 11⁄2 hours away, Greenville Spartanburg
Airport is 1 hour, and Asheville Airport is 3⁄4 hour away. Every possible service is close, by excellent roads, but not too close. Link
